We had the good fortune of connecting with Sofia Claire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as a necessary part of growth. If we don’t take risks, we will stay idle forever. I know that people look at me like I’m insane, taking the risks that I do, but I know that every risk I take is another step closer to my end goal. To be a successful musician, you HAVE to take risks. I made the decision to pursue music knowing that if I didn’t take every chance, I’d fail. And I don’t plan to fail.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that my vocal stylings and story set me apart from a lot of artists. I have been vocally trained in many different genres and have taken what I like from each to shape my own vocal sound. I grew up in the theater, so I love to belt and incorporate my vibrato, but I also love the flips and runs that come from country and pop music. I was raised on country music, so I would always try to mimic the style and ended up creating my own country sound through my training and what I’d hear from my favorite country artists.
As for my story, I’m not your typical country artist. I am a first generation Italian-American and spend a lot of time at my families farm in Italy during the summers. I was born and raised in Redwood City, Ca. and I grew up riding horses but owned my own or had the ability to until I was about 22. I didn’t grow up having a lot of land but my dad would always find a way to incorporate agriculture into our lives, whether it be gardening and growing our own vegetables, raising chickens or hunting and fishing. He always found a way to bring a piece of the farm in Italy to our backyard in Redwood City.
These experiences shaped me into the country artist I am today. They’ve helped me to cultivate my own sound and create a brand that represents ME. It hasn’t been an easy route. No one around me has pursued a career in music, so I’ve had to make many of my own connections and navigate my way through what it is to become a country artist. My vocal coach, Jessica Ford, and my mom have helped me a lot with this. I’ve learned so much in the past two years since my first visit to Nashville and am constantly learning more. I’ve had to overcome many mental blocks and obstacles to learn how to become fearless. The work will never be done, and as an artist, you have to be okay with that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie was visiting for a week, the first thing I’d do is take her to my favorite dive bar, The Saddle Room, in Redwood City, CA. After a night of stiff drinks and darts, we’d spend a day in Half Moon Bay, having lobster rolls and drinking at the beach! I’d make SURE to take her to Fishermans Wharf in San Francisco, and then to North Beach for some Italian food. We’d go to the barn and I’d introducer her to our very spunky Andalusian horse, Santo, and maybe take her to ride if she was up for it! We’d spend a weekend at my families cabin in Arnold, Ca., where we’d swim in the river, do some midnight frogging, ride ATV’s, and play beer pong with all of our friends. Then to finish the trip up, we’d go shopping in Palo Alto and have dim sum! The perfect week IMO!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family deserves all of the credit in the world for never wavering from supporting my dreams. My father came to the United States in search of the American Dream, and has always instilled in me that in this country, I can be whatever and whoever I want to be. My mother being the powerhouse that she is, raised me to be passionate and to dream big while also to have the mind of a business woman and to think logically. My brothers played instruments and filled our house with country music and creativity. I was raised in a huge Italian-American family that supports each other through thick and thin, I thank God every day for all of them. I would not be where I am today without them.
